Human Climate

Eric Dean Gallery, Wabash College, Crawfordsville, IN
September 7–October 3, 2012

During a week-long residency, Visiting Artist Sarah Rockett will collaborate with Wabash College studio art students to install Human Climate in the Eric Dean Galleries. The exhibit explores socially acceptable phobias and the resulting persistence of individual anonymity in American society. Extracting forms and situations from common fears and cinema, Rockett creates work that exposes our complacent participation in systems of social interaction. In the same way that Rockett investigates the fluctuating contradictions of social behaviors, she also collapses boundaries between artistic disciplines as she combines materials such as wire and latex with traditional drawing media. Rockett's works often begin as drawings on the wall and transition to three dimensions to "become drawings in space." Casting shadows, the external elements create additional surface layers imposed upon the originating drawings. Additional support provided by the McGregor Visiting Artists Fund.

Public Lecture: Wednesday, September 5, 7 pm, Korb Classroom, Fine Arts Center
Opening Reception: Friday, September 7, 4:30–6

August 17 - 26, 2012

Invitational Group Show
Curated by Next Gallery directors:  Danma vs. V2r2
Beyond Erotic invites viewers to experience the subject of sexuality as more than merely erotic or shocking.  When one allows time to be spend with the artwork you realize is more than that.  Maybe it's serious, social commentary, or absurd, humorous and raunchy.  We ask viewers to set aside negative associations with sexuality and honestly question the ascription of taboo.

Artists:  John Babcock, D.B Michelle, Nikki Vail, JOUVELT, Ruben Gaucin, Sarah Rockett, Dave Seiler, Danma vs. V2r2, Erik Isaac, Jill Razer Mustaffa, Jill Rennee Grant, Peter Strange Yumi, Valerie Savarie, Steve Schaffner

Collection of Others

Picture
Ice Cube Gallery, Denver, CO
May 24 - June 16, 2012

In her exhibition, Collection of Others, Sarah Rockett examines the seldom mentioned current human climate in American society:  Our common place neglected systems of interaction, integral anonymity in the collective of society, and the distrustful necessity of one another.  Using wire, latex and ink, Rockett creates works composed of many parts to address social behaviors and expectations.  Her interest lies in articulating social constructs by reinventing approaches to familiar materials.  Rockett's process is continuously experimental, and originates from the field of expanded drawing.  Working with a wide variety of processes and media, she brings the formal elements of drawing into innovate spaces and forms.  Nameless organic specimens, drawings on latex skins, and wire silhouettes facilitate an intimidating sense of "others" in relation to the self.

Juried Group Show
Mind Pool 2012:  Where streams of consciousness collect.  An exhibit of artwork in any medium that was created relying heavily on intuition.  When artists allow the element of risk into their creative process, the opportunity for surprise is increased.  Sometimes these surprises are called happy accidents.

Juror:  Kara Duncan, owner and director of Vertigo Art Space in the Santa Fe Arts district of Denver.

Where We Are:  Tectonic Shifts and Dissolution of Boundaries

Picture
National Juried Group Exhibition
Olive DeLuce Gallery, Northwest Missouri State University
January 17 - February 17, 2012

Over the past decade the world of contemporary art has experienced the rumblings of a tectonic shift.  Many contemporary artists combine and work across disciplines in their queries about the meaning of art and its relationship to everyday life.  This exhibition aims to explore the potential of contemporary visual art that embraces the blurry lines being explored by artists who are currently breaking down boundaries and working between the tenets of two dimensional art practice, mixed media, digital and new media art, and the physical world we move through.

Juror:  Elaine A. King, PhD, Professor of History of Art, Theory and Museum Studies at Carnegie Mellon University.
